Tip of the Week from our HomeCare Almanac

When spring rolls around, we take off the bulky winter clothes and discover the rolls of flab around the middle. Many folks drag out the 10-speed and try to pedal away the pounds.

Before you ride off into the sunset, however, do a few simple things to make certain the bicycle will make it under such a heavy load. Remember TLC. Sure, that stands for "tender loving care" but, in the bike game, it stands for tightening, lubrication, and cleaning.

Tighten everything on the bike, paying particular attention to the seat and handlebars. Adjust the brakes and the gears and be sure they work properly.

Lubricate all of the moving parts, including the chain.

Now clean everything on the bike to be sure your hands or feet won't slip, and so the bike will look its best.

Check the tire pressure and have all the necessary lights and reflectors if you'll be riding after dark.

Just doing all that work will burn off some calories.
